Making Guardians of the Galaxy furniture |
Possibly my favourite piece to date!! Those who follow my Instagram will have already seen the progress of this project taking shape over the last few months and now it's complete I can share it on my blog - which I've been dying to do (and not just because it means I've finally finished it ;-) ).
My upcycle pieces just happen. We'll be at a car boot and I'll see something and think - oh that would be fab with a Spider-man cover or made into superhero shelving or even Harry Potter's Monster book of monsters (oh yes, all 3 are projects in progress.....). But this piece - I wasn't even around for - my wonderful partner came home with it:

Tatty old stool crying out to by Marvellous again |
I wasn't intending to make this piece themed at all. I had some great retro tape material and thought I'd use it - but I didn't quite have enough for the lid as well and that is when it turned into another Marvel themed piece of furniture.
I took off the material, legs and lid and covered the main section of the stool with the retro material. I used my faithful Mod Podge and this covered it very nicely. The edging around the top was glued and the edging around the bottom was stapled.

A quick and simple way to recover an old stool |
For the legs, I used the Dulux paint that I received in my goodie bag from Gumtree's
#UpcycleRevolution event. As the legs were screw-ins I made some holes in a cardboard box and used this as a holding base for the paint to dry.
Once the above was done everything was put on hold until I found the right fabric for the lid. I usually source a lot of my material on eBay but there was nothing on Guardians of the Galaxy related - nothing that would suit my pastel colours. I had almost given up with a theme and had decided on using plain blue cotton for the lid when I found some bed lining on the US Amazon site that was delivered to the UK. I do believe it's perfect.

Getting ready to transform this dated old lid into GOTG theme |
The bedding I bought was a fitted sheet, flat sheet and a pillowcase - the pillowcase and flat sheet are now on my son's bed, as he was in the room when I opened my package and loved it instantly (as did I). As the fitted sheet was for a twin bed 'we' agreed that mummy could have the fitted sheet for the stool - my son has great negotiation skills at the age of 3.
The lid has button indents on and I had no plans to try and pull any of those out whatsoever and as I didn't want them showing through I used wadding to cover them and placed the material on top.

We are Groot lid |
With the lid finally completed I asked my partner to help me with the new hinge and screwed the legs back in and my tatty old dated stool now has pride of place in my front room - where I found my son sitting inside - haha.
