Every house move is different, with its own annoyances and issues to contend with. Each time you move, you probably swear that this is the last time! If you are planning to move house and are looking for ways to make it a little less stressful, then you may find these tips helpful:
Start the Prep Work Early
It’s never too early to get started on sorting your house out in preparation for the big move. While you obviously can’t pack everything as you will need most of your belongings in the lead up to moving day, you can make a start.
If you are worried about jinxing the move by packing too early, you could focus on decluttering instead. Decluttering is majorly helpful when you move house, so you aren’t merely packing and moving items you no longer need.
Decorative and non-essential items can be packed up early with minimum impact. Wrapping up items such as ornaments and photo frames is a useful way to give yourself a head start.
Do Some Research
If you are moving to a different area, you will probably have to do some admin work. Do some research to find out which local doctors surgery and dentist that you will need to register with. If you have pets, it is a good idea to find out which vets are the best in the area.
If you have kids, you have probably already looked around the local schools and nurseries to decide where to send them. To help kids feel more settled, it is useful to find out where the nearest play parks are, as well as clubs and activities for kids that run in your new area.
Gather Together Your Paperwork
When you sell your home, you will probably need to pass on the paperwork that relates to it to the new owner. If you are getting a new gas boiler installed prior to the sale, or have had one installed in recent years, you will need to provide the guarantee and paperwork for the new owner. Paperwork for the installation of new windows and exterior doors is also sometimes required, depending on how recently they were installed.
Keep Communicating
The legal process of buying and selling homes is notoriously stressful, and can also be long-winded. Keeping up with what is happening and what stage of the conveyancing process you currently at, can help to relieve some of this stress. Not knowing what is happening, and the uncertainty which that brings is stressful in itself.
While your conveyancer probably won’t appreciate being continually pestered, it can give you peace of mind to receive some regular updates on how the sale and purchase are progressing.
