Geomag Mechanics is a great brand for exactly that!
The Mechanics range is - challenging! The fun and learning begin as soon as the box is open.
In the past we have received both the Geomag Mechanics Challenge Goal and the Geomag Mechanics Gravity Combo sets and it always takes us a fair while to set up the pieces, let alone play with them.
While the Goal set has an instruction book, Gravity Combo gives the ideas of what you can make in the book, but on the packaging and book, there is a link, via a GR code, to the website to show you videos on how to make the sets.
My son, like most children, tends to look at the image and just know what we need!
The Goal set is brilliant, it has four sections to create and adjust making it a versatile kit to build. I find Geomag to be robust and sturdy and a building brand that will last, can be added to and will make a great collection for children fascinated by engineering, science and creativity, even if they are not aware they are.
The Gravity Combo set, already a large set with 153 pieces, can also be added to from other sets such as the Goal set, and will last a good afternoon if not a day's worth of fun with the children.
Pros: Challenging, encourages inquisitive play
Cons: Tendency to lose the balls.
We would rate the GeoMag Mechanics sets 5 out of 5 for gameplay.

About Mechanics Geomag
Mechanics is the construction platform that combines the forces of magnetism with a world of mechanical construction, to stimulate creativity, inventiveness and ingenuity.
In addition to the classic magnetic rods and steel spheres, Geomag Mechanics adds mechanical elements within the constructions, expanding the play possibilities: some parts of the structures are able to rotate, triggering chain reactions from the magnetic attraction and repulsion.
In 2018 the innovative Mechanics Gravity platform was launched, consisting of a series of incredible solutions that harness the forces of gravity and magnetism and set the Mechanics models in motion.
Geomag World Sustainability
Geomag has a whole section on its website with regard to sustainability, and what its aims are and is an absolute must-read.
One of their five goals is: Responsible Production and Consumption
In 2020 they converted the Classic and Magicube lines to use 100% recycled plastics. The need to not only comply with toy safety regulations but also high standards of quality and aesthetics has required a commitment over the years by the research team to search for the best materials and to adapt the production process.
In 2021, they achieved the goal and transitioned all our new lines into recycled plastic, including Geomag Mechanics. Packaging is also made with a high percentage of recycled materials, on average over 70%.
The production process uses 100% renewable energy from Swiss hydroelectric plants.
